- Dr. Ben Carson, a neurosurgeon and the author of the autobiographical novel, Gifted Hands, is most famous for his surgical work in which he successfully separated conjoined twins who were joined at the head. This week, students will begin reading Gifted Hands and completing a Reader Response Journal on Monday. Note: There will be no Word Wizard homework this week.
- On Tuesday, students will be going to the Media Center for a lesson with Ms. Schartiger and for the opportunity to return and/or check out books.
- On Wednesday, students will read and take notes on informational articles about the pros and cons of separating conjoined twins.
- On Thursday, students will write an argumentative essay using information from the articles to argue the case for separating or not separating conjoined twins.
- On Friday, students will continue to read Gifted Hands and create a T-chart identifying positive and negative life experiences in Ben Carson's life.
Reading Goals: By the end of this week, periods 1, 5, and 7 will have read Gifted Hands through chapter 4. Periods 2 & 6 will have read Gifted Hands through chapter 3. We will be doing the reading in class, as there are not enough books for each student to take home (unless you bought your child a copy!), but students will be required to make up on their own time any reading that they miss or are behind on in class.
